BONNYVILLE – Provincial and Federal politicians in the region issued statements March 15 regarding MD of Bonnyville Reeve Barry Kalinski being stranded in Haiti as the unrest in the country continues to prevent him from leaving.
Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs could not be reached directly for comment regarding Kalinski’s situation, however, her office issued the following statement Friday afternoon:
“We are glad to hear the initial update that Mr. Kalinski is currently safe. However, with news that there is uncertainty on his ability to return home, the priority is to reunite him with his family and friends.

“Upon hearing of this issue, our office has officially reached out to county contacts to offer our assistance. Our thoughts are with Mr. Kalinski and his family, we are committed to doing everything we can to coordinate with global affairs until his safe return home to Lakeland.”
Bonnyville-Cold Lake- St. Paul MLA Scott Cyr said he will do whatever he can to assist in Kalinski’s return to Canada.
“I have a deep admiration for Reeve Kalinski's unwavering compassion and the remarkable work he is undertaking with the Mission of Grace. It's incredibly heartening to see his dedication to improving the lives of the children and the community in Haiti, despite the perilous conditions. His primary concern for the safety and well-being of the children, rather than his own, speaks volumes of his character and bravery. Barry Kalinski's selflessness and courage in such harrowing times are truly commendable, and I hold great respect and admiration for him.”
"I wholeheartedly support Barry and join in praying for his safety, as well as the safety of all those he is helping. It's in moments like these that our collective prayers and support can make a significant difference,” Cyr stated.
“Regarding the efforts to assist Canadians currently stranded in Haiti, it is important to note that such international matters predominantly fall under Federal jurisdiction. In this context, MP Shannon Stubbs may have more detailed information about the ongoing efforts to facilitate the safe return of Canadians, including Reeve Kalinski. Nevertheless, I want to assure you that should Reeve Kalinski himself, or a member of his family, reach out to my constituency office seeking assistance, I am committed to doing absolutely everything within my power to support them.
“Again, I extend my deepest admiration for Reeve Kalinski's efforts and my prayers for his safe return.”
Meanwhile, Kalinski confirmed to LakelandTODAY.ca Monday morning that his situation remains unchanged. "I'm doing fine," he said in a text message, adding he was "not sure yet' about when he might be able to leave Haiti.
