ST. PAUL – As a precautionary measure due to dry conditions, the County of St. Paul issued a Level 2 Fire Advisory on March 25.

The County will continue to monitor conditions.

Safe wood campfires will still be allowed on private land and in campgrounds. "Safe wood campfires" are defined as an open-air fire within a metal, brick, or rock fire ring, as defined under the County’s Fire Advisory Activities Policy.

Residents can still apply for fire permits for “any other open-air fire,” but issuance may be restricted, reads the County policy. Open-air fire does not include propane or natural gas-powered appliances.

Existing fire permits are also still valid, but issuance of new fire permits may be suspended. County residents with fire permits are advised not to burn in bad weather conditions, and to follow Alberta’s safe burning practices. For example, if wind is gusting over 15 km/h, immediately extinguish the fire, according to the provincial website.

While fire permit applications are still accepted, the County asks the public for understanding, as applications will only be accepted or reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

The Town of St. Paul and the Town of Elk Point are exempt from the fire advisory.
