CALGARY — Calgary's fire department says three townhomes were destroyed and numerous people were injured following what neighbours say was an explosion.

Of the six who were injured late Saturday night, firefighters say one sustained life-threatening injuries.

The Calgary Fire Department says crews were faced with significant flames and smoke when they arrived at Las Americas Villas in the city's northeast around 11 p.m., and in addition to the three destroyed homes, the fire was threatening a fourth.

They say citizens near the scene reported there had been a blast, and debris was scattered across a large area.

The fire department says none of the four affected homes are habitable and that the residents have been displaced.

A fire investigator along with police are investigating the cause.
