Five now charged over a year after body discovered east of Okotoks

Thirty-seven-year-old Calgary resident Tara Miller was found dead near Highway 552 and 128 Street East in Foothills County on March 30, 2023.

Five people have now been charged in connection to a murder after a woman’s body was found near a highway east of Okotoks last spring. 

Paul Fettig, a 43-year-old resident of Calgary, has been charged with manslaughter following the discovery of the body of 37-year-old Calgary resident Tara Miller on March 30, 2023.

Fettig's charge comes nearly 11 months after four others were charged in connection to the homicide.

After a judicial interim release hearing, Fettig was remanded for a court appearance in Calgary on Nov. 18.

Miller's body was found near Highway 552 and 128 Street East in Foothills County. The cause of death was found to be homicide and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation. 

On Jan. 18, 2024, three Calgary residents and a man from Wheatland County were arrested in connection to the murder by the Major Crimes Unit, with assistance from the Calgary Police Service and RCMP Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit. 

Gurpreet Gill, 30, of Calgary, was charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault and using a firearm in an indictable offence. 

Greg Schuster, 30, was charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and accessory after the fact.

Shyana Popplestone, 25, was charged with manslaughter.

Jared Burke, 24, of Wheatland County, was charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and using a firearm in an indictable offence.
