Human trafficking case adjourned until December

Sgt. Matt Pumphrey of Cochrane RCMP’s General Investigations Section speaks at a press conference about an historic human trafficking case earlier this month at the Cochrane detachment.

The trial for a Cochrane resident charged in a historic 20-year-old human trafficking case will be returning to Cochrane’s Alberta Court of Justice next month, following his most recent appearance on Nov. 26.

In an announcement by the Cochrane RCMP General Investigation Section on Nov. 13, it outlined that the results of their investigation date back to between 2004 and 2007, when a female became the victim of human trafficking at the hands of a male she had met over an online dating site.

It was further explained that the accused exploited nude photos of the victim, placed them on an internet site, where other males would contact the site and arrange for sexual services.

The accused was arrested on Nov. 7 for charges relating to human trafficking, sexual assault causing bodily harm, unlawful confinement, as well as extortion.

The accused appeared in Cochrane’s Alberta Court of Justice on Nov. 26, where it was decided that his case would be adjourned to Dec. 17.

A publication ban was imposed by the courts on Nov. 26, which falls under Section 486.4 of the Criminal Code.
