One dead after SUV swerves to miss deer, hits semi on Northern Alberta highway

ATHABASCA COUNTY - One person is dead after a collision between a SUV and a semi-trailer on Highway 63 at Range Road 192 Sunday night (Oct. 13).

Athabasca RCMP and Boyle RCMP responded to the call which came in at 10:50 pm on Sunday night, with Emergency Medical Service, and Athabasca County Fire Services providing assistance. An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that a SUV travelling southbound on Highway 63 swerved to miss a deer and collided with a semi travelling northbound," according to an Athabasca RCMP press release.

"The driver and lone occupant of the SUV, was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the semi suffered non-life-threatening physical injuries. There were no passengers or additional occupants in either involved vehicle.

"RCMP send condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."

The highway was closed at the scene overnight but is open again as of Monday morning (Oct. 14).
