BARRHEAD/WESTLOCK, Alta. - Three people are declared deceased following a motor vehicle collision about 20 minutes out of Barrhead on the morning of Oct. 3.

The accident occurred at about 7:45 a.m. on Highway 654, just east of the Highway 777 intersection in Westlock County.

In an RCMP media release, RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Deanna Fontaine said their preliminary investigation shows that a pickup was heading westbound on Highway 654 when it crossed the centre line and ran head-on into a eastward travelling SUV.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene.

As a result of the collision, Fontaine said the driver and passenger of the pickup truck became trapped inside the vehicle, which then ignited into flames. Both the driver and passenger of the pickup truck are also deceased.

The Barrhead RCMP, along with a collision reconstructionist, continue to investigate the collision.

The Barrhead RCMP extends their condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. No further updates are expected.
