The RCMP's Major Crimes Unit and officers from the Cold Lake detachment have arrested 23-year-old Garrett Blackman in connection with a recent homicide.
According to an RCMP press release, officers arrested Blackman, of Cold Lake First Nations, without incident on Sept. 8 in a motel on the east side of Edmonton. An arrest warrant had been issued for Blackman, who was wanted in connection to the murder of Gregory Gannaw, a 19-year-old Edmonton man.
On Sept. 2 at around 11:30, according to Cold Lake RCMP, officers responded to a call and found Gannaw's body in a ditch just off Range Road 425, approximately 20 kilometres south of Cold Lake. An autopsy was conducted on Sept. 4, determining the manner of death to be homicide.
The initial RCMP investigation identified two suspects, including 26-year-old Stoney Bearhead of Paul Band First Nation who was also thought to be connected to the homicide. After attending Bearhead's parent's residence, RCMP discovered Bearhead to be dead, leaving Blackman as the lone suspect.
Blackman appeared before the Justice of the Peace on Sept. 10 where his first court date was scheduled in Cold Lake.
