Two Lac La Biche area residents killed in Highway 28 collision

Two Lac La Biche area residents are reported to have died in a collision on Highway 28, near the community of Spedden in Smoky Lake County on July 4.

Smoky Lake RCMP received a report of a serious motor vehicle collision between a car and a large pickup truck on Highway 28 near range road 121 at 10:40 p.m. The crash site is about 100 kilometres southeast of Lac La Biche.

Emergency crews arriving at the scene observed that two occupants of a Mazda sedan were deceased. The occupant of the other vehicle, a GMC 3500, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital by EMS, according to an RCMP media release.

Police say the two people killed were a 33-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man, both from the Lac La Biche area.

RCMP remained at the scene for several hours conducting their investigation. Although early in that investigation, police believe that the Mazda struck an animal causing it swerve into oncoming traffic where it struck the GMC.

“RCMP express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” notes the news release from RCMP.

Although police have not provided further details about the deceased, several social media posts offering condolences and thoughts have been directed to families and members of the Kikino Métis Settlement over the last few days.
