Vikings take Voyageurs 1-0

Voyageurs goaltender Justin Borsa makes a save at last Friday night’s game in Lac La Biche. The local team lost 1-0.

It was a close game for Portage College’s Voyageurs, who fought for a win last Friday night but lost 1-0 to the Augustana Vikings in Lac La Biche.

“It was a really close game and it could have gone either way,” said Terry Ewasiuk, the Voyageurs head coach.

Both teams were able to keep the other side from scoring in the first period, but the Vikings got the only goal of the evening in the second period during a powerplay.

Even though the team didn’t score a goal during last Friday’s game, Portage out-shot the Vikings 32-22.

“We should have won but didn’t. We got three points from our games against SAIT so I guess this is the way the hockey gods are balancing it out,” said Ewasiuk, adding that Borsa and the team’s defensive line played a good game. “The guys were disappointed in the loss but not in their effort.”

Voyageur goalie Justin Borsa was named the Alberta College’s Athletic Conference player of the week last week, after stopping 28 of 29 shots during the October 23 game against SAIT where the Voyageurs won 5-1. Borsa was also recognized for 23 stops on 25 shots when the Voyageurs played against SAIT the following night.

The Voyageurs will be busy on the road this month, playing eight games in November.

“The games this month will have a huge impact on our standings and by the end of the month, we should have a good understanding of where we fit in,” said Ewasiuk.

The Voyageurs play against the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary this weekend.
