Woman seriously injured in alleged assault at college residence

Police and EMS responded to the residence the morning of Jan. 29.

A Lac La Biche woman is in serious condition after what police allege was an assault taking place at a Portage College student residence this morning.

Local RCMP and EMS were called to the housing unit this morning at about 10:45 in an attempt to locate a suspect from another incident that occurred earlier this morning. When they got there, they found both the male suspect - and a local woman who had suffered serious injuries police allege were caused by an assault from the man.

The woman was taken to hospital and remains in serious condition at William J. Cadzow Health Centre. Family members have been notified, but her name is not being released.

The suspect was taken into custody. Charges have not yet been finalized, but police say possible charges include assault, assault with a weapon and forcible confinement.

Police are not yet releasing any other details, including the name of the suspect, the nature of the early morning incident or the type of weapon suspected to have been used in the incident.

This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
