The Mallaig Curling Club had its mixed bonspiel last weekend, and 16 teams showed up for the annual event.
In the A event, skip Denis Vallee, together with Rebecca Corriveau as third, Leo deMoissac as second, and Marcella Vallee as lead, took out Team Looy. Both teams tied the seventh end, but Denis Vallee made the last shot to give his team the win.
In the B event, Phil Amyotte and his team, consisting of Rachel Vallee as third, Richard St. Arnault as second, and Carmelle Chornohus as lead, beat Marc Michaud and his team, Northern Lights Welding.
“The final game for the B event was fairly close, and the teams went into an extra ninth end after tying the eighth,” explained Rae Michaud, a volunteer for the Mallaig & District Agricultural Society & Recreation Association.
Norm Vallee and his team, consisting of Chantal Vallee as third, Dana Michaud as second, and Paul Michaud rounding out as lead, were victorious in the C event final after seven ends versus Team Storseth, led by Iver Storseth as skip, Joanne Dechaine as third, Charlie Dechaine as second and Georgette Michaud as lead.
“Two out of the three games went down to the last stones,” said Ernie Piquette, the organizer of the bonspiel.
Piquette also mentioned that the bonspiel had a couple more teams compared to last year’s event, adding, “It was good to have support from our neighbouring towns. We had support from St. Paul, Bonnyville, and one team came as far as Crossfield.”
The next bonspiel at Mallaig will be the ladies’ bonspiel, held on the last weekend of February at the Mallaig curling rink.
