Emergency department disruptions expected at Smoky Lake hospital

SMOKY LAKE - Temporary disruptions in service are expected at the George McDougall - Smoky Lake Healthcare Centre overnight for several days between July 29 and Aug. 9.

According to Alberta Health Services, there will be no physician on site in the emergency department (ED) at the the following times:

  • 7 p.m., Monday, July 29 – 8 a.m., Tuesday, July 30
  • 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 30 – 8 a.m., Wednesday, July 31
  • 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 31 – 8 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 1
  • 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 1– 8 a.m., Friday, Aug. 2
  • 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6 – 8 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7
  • 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7 – 8 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 8
  • 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 8 – 8 a.m., Friday, Aug. 9

"Nursing staff will remain on-site in the emergency department providing triage, assessments and referrals for patients to alternate emergency departments in surrounding communities, as needed," according to AHS.

Patients should call 911 if they have a medical emergency.

"EMS will remain available to the community and will work with the local healthcare centre to ensure residents continue to have access to the emergency services they need."

Residents can also call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7 for non-emergency health-related questions.

"If coverage is found, disruptions may be cancelled," according to AHS.
