Patrick Dubelt was sure his eyes were playing a trick on him when he scanned his Daily Grand ticket and saw a long number appear on the customer display screen. Patrick and his brother Sean won $500,000 on the Jan. 2 draw.

The win was just publicly announced Wednesday in a media release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

“I scanned the ticket and immediately started counting the zeroes,” he explained while claiming his prize. “I had to scan the ticket a few more times because honestly, I thought the machine was broken.”

Similar to Patrick, Sean also couldn’t believe they had won.

“I thought Pat was joking or playing a trick on me,” he said. “I went to his house and he scanned the ticket on the Lotto Spot app to show me it was real. It took a while for me to believe it.”

The brothers said they are going to take some time deciding what to do with their respective $250,000 shares of the win, but Patrick had an idea to get them started.

“I’m thinking of a beach somewhere,” he laughed.

Patrick purchased the winning ticket from Myrnam Convenience Store, located at 4814 50 Avenue in Myrnam. The Dubelts matched the five main draw numbers on the January 2 draw – 2, 19, 20, 27 and 47 – to win the game’s second-highest prize.
