LAC LA BICHE - Over 100 curlers making up 26 teams from the Lac La Biche area and beyond were at the Bold Center over the Nov. 1 weekend to compete against each other in the 44th Annual Oilmen’s Bonspiel.

The event, which has been an annual occasion since 1982, was put on by the Lac La Biche and District Curling Club.

Over the three day-three tournament, the 26 teams, which also included curlers from Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Edmonton, Calgary and Fort McMurray, played in a triple knockout format, giving each team at least three games on the ice.

The semifinals and finals were held on the afternoon of Nov. 3, with the top teams contending for the opportunity to win a variety of prizes. In addition to cash prizes donated by the Lac La Biche Oilmen’s Association, winners could also bring home an assortment of items donated by local businesses, including a pizza oven, lawn chairs, or a bluetooth speaker.

The next major event to be hosted by the Lac La Biche and District Curling Club is the one-day Funspiel, which is set to take place on Dec. 7.

In the new year, recreational curlers from near and far will face off against each other in the Men’s Bonspiel. This annual event is scheduled for Jan. 18.
