SADDLE LAKE - Several athletes from across the region took part in this year’s Alberta Indigenous Games in Edmonton.

The provincial gathering is held every August and brings Indigenous athletes together for several days of competition.

Competing at this year’s games was a young basketball team from Saddle Lake. The U11 Mites ended up being the division silver medallists. The Saddle Lake Willows lost by just one basket in finals, but athletes reported having a great time and had so much fun, according to coach Brendalee Cardinal.

The co-ed team is hoping to return next year and claim the gold medals, adds Cardinal.

According to information from Alberta Indigenous Games, "Our mandate for the Alberta Indigenous Games is reclaiming our youth through sport development, educational empowerment, career opportunities, and cultural connection."
