MD of Bonnyville municipal candidates confirmed

Nearly two dozen candidates across the Municipal District are vying to fill seven seats on the MD of Bonnyville’s council.

BONNYVILLE – With the federal election all said and done, some residents may already be feeling the effects of voter fatigue. However, with municipal elections still on the horizon, MD of Bonnyville residents will head to the polls again before the end of October. 

On Oct. 18, residents of the MD of Bonnyville will vote to elect the next reeve and councillors in the 2021 municipal election. Residents will also be asked two referendum question and will have the option to select three senate nominees.

The referendum questions residents will be asked to answer on election day are: 

  • “Should section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982 – Parliament and the government of Canada’s commitment to the principle of making equalization payments – be removed from the constitution?
  • “Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight Saving Time, which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks twice a year?” 

Names on the ballot 

In all Wards, voters will have to decide between two nominations for reeve. The MD’s current reeve, Greg Sawchuk, will run against nominee Barry Kalinski for the top spot on council.   

All seven MD of Bonnyville’s current council members are seeking re-election, and are all being challenged by candidates vying for a spot on council. 

Candidates running for Ward 6 include incumbent Ben Fadeyiw and Diane Jenkinson.  

In Ward 5, six candidates will compete for a seat on council. Running against incumbent councillor Dana Swigart, are candidates Angela Cook, Roy Dell, Monika Iverson, Erwin Thompson and Andy Wakaruk. 

In Ward 4, incumbent Edward C. Duchesne will square up against Don Slipchuk and Marvin Tkachuk. 

In Ward 3, voters will choose between incumbent councillor Mike Krywiak and Lawrence Makaruk. 

Candidates running in Ward 2 include incumbent Darcy Skarsen, Kurt Richard and David Fox.  

In Ward 1, Josh Crick and Louise White will run against incumbent Marc Jubinville.  

Voting opportunities 

On election day, there will be 15 polling stations set up across the Municipal District. In addition, there have been three dates set up for advanced polling.  

This will create more opportunities for voters to cast a ballot, compared to the last municipal election when there was only one advanced voting day arranged, said Esther Quiambao the Returning Officer and director of legislative and information services.     

The advanced polls for the MD of Bonnyville municipal election are set for: 

  • Tuesday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the M.D. Administration Office. 

  • Thursday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the M.D. Administration Office. 

  • Friday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cold Lake Energy Centre. 

On election day, constituents living in Ward 1 will vote at either the Beaverdam Hall, the Bonnyville Seniors Drop-in Centre, or Fort Kent Seniors Hall.  

Ward 2 constituents can cast their ballot at Eastbourne Community Hall, the Bonnyville Seniors Drop-in Centre or Vezeau Beach Shaw House.  

Constituents from Ward 3 will be able to vote at Flat Lake Community Hall, Glendon RCMP Hall or Goodridge Jubilee Hall.  

Voters from Ward 4 will cast a ballot at Lessard Community Hall, Willow Prairie Community Hall or the Bonnyville Seniors Drop-in Centre.  

Ward 5 constituents will have the opportunity to vote at Alexander Hall, Ardmore Senior Citizens Club and Riverhurst Hall. Voting stations in  

Ward 6 will be located at Cherry Grove Hall, Cold Lake Energy Centre as well as Riverhurst Hall.
