Cold Lake will not be getting an Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) team for the 2025-26 season after an application was denied by the league. 

The 2025 edition of the one-day curling bonspiel, which has been taking place for decades and features a hockey theme each year, was held at the Lac La Biche and District Curling Club on Jan. 18.

Lac La Biche defeated the Eagles in Edson 6-4 on Friday, Jan. 17. They repeated their performance the following evening at the Bold Center with another 6-4 win.

People gathered at the Cherry Grove Hall to celebrate their hunting harvest, have antlers measured, mingle with other outdoors-people, and also had the chance to win some big prizes during the Cherry Grove Big Buck Night.

The program, which is held at Lac La Biche's Bold Center, teaches skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, as well as understanding basic game strategies.

Rob Kruk, president of the Lac La Biche Backcountry Riders, says while the club could use a bit more snow on local trails, the situation is better than last winter.

Junior high basketball teams from across Lakeland and beyond, including Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Lloydminster, and Vermillion, came out to compete at the annual tournament hosted by Glen Avon School.
