About 27 people were evacuated to St. Albert early Monday morning after a fire torched a hotel in Morinville.

Emergency crews received a 911 call about a fire at the Morinville Plaza and Suites at 10219 100 Ave. at 8:03 p.m. Nov. 6, Town of Morinville spokesperson Tracy Dalzell-Helse said in an email. Morinville firefighters were on scene by 8:13 p.m., and soon called in backup from the Gibbons, Legal, and St. Albert fire departments. Emergency crews closed Hwy. 642 between 102 St. and 103 St. as some 35 firefighters worked to douse the flames.

In an email, RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Sigmund Janke said the fire affected the second floor of the suite portion of the plaza complex, which has several businesses attached. No injuries or deaths were reported as a result of the fire. The RCMP did not find any suspicious activity related to the fire.

Dalzell-Helse said about 27 people were evacuated to the Morinville Legion hall as a result of the fire. Some were later moved to the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in St. Albert early on Monday Nov. 7.
