Kehewin school marks National Aboriginal Veterans Day with remembrance ceremony

Indigenous veterans and members of the Bonnyville and St. Paul Legion attended a flag raising and remembrance ceremony at Kehewin school on Nov. 8. From left to right, those raising flags included retired Sgt. Louis Lapatack from the US Army, Roland Poitras of the St. Paul Legion, retired veteran Jorge Trottier of the US Army and member of the Saskatchewan First Nations Veterans Association, Bonnyville Legion Member Duane Hite, retired member of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry second battalion Clint Lapatak, and retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces William Quinney.

Retired Sgt. Louis Lapatack from the US Army shared the importance of Remembrance Day ceremonies and a brief account of his experience in the Vietnam War. Lapatak told students that he owes his well-being to the elders who supported him following his return home from the war.

Students from Kehewin's Headstart program got the chance to meet local veterans.

KEHEWIN - A flag raising and remembrance ceremony was held at Kinokamasihk Kiskinohamatokamik (Kehewin Community Education Centre) on Nov. 8 to mark National Aboriginal Veterans Day and to honour those who served to protect Canada's freedoms.
