BONNYVILLE – Another successful Mini Wetland Tournament was hosted by the Bonnyville Soccer Association on June 10.
The tournament that centers around fun and sportsmanship saw over 800 young athletes from U7 to U11 hit the soccer pitches, which is roughly 100 more players than last year.
“We had expected to see the same number of players as last year, but it's great to see our tournament continue to grow year over year,” said Melissa Foglietta, the registrar with the Bonnyville Soccer Assocation.
This year, 65 teams from across the Lakeland including Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Lac La Biche, Vermilion, Vegreville, Kehewin, Sedgewick, St. Paul and Elk Point, attended the one-day tournament.
KidSport Bonnyville returned to the tournament again this year and ran a pay-and-kick station for players, siblings, parents, or anyone who wanted to test their skills and accuracy, explained Foglietta.
The cost to kick-off at the station was $2 with all proceeds supporting KidSport Bonnyville – and offering players a chance to win some prizes.
A 50/50 draw that was moved online this year generated $3,000 for the soccer club.
Each player in the Mini Wetland’s Tournament received a medal for coming out, playing hard and most of all having fun.
