LAC LA BICHE - Being able to safely dispose of outdated household cleaners and chemicals, fuel containers, as well as confidential documents is crucial for reducing the amount of hazardous waste that finds its way into landfills.

On Oct. 19, as part of Waste Reduction Week events held in Lac La Biche from Oct. 14-21, residents of the area could bring these items to the County Centre on Hwy 663 be discarded in a safe and environmentally-friendly manner during the Household Hazardous Waste Round-up and Shredding event.

The collection – one of two held annually in Lac La Biche County – took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There was also a shredder on onsite at the County Center operated by staff where people could have confidential and unwanted documents and papers recycled.

Waste Reduction Week events got underway this year with a Tie Dye workshop, which was held at McArthur Place on Oct. 15. In this workshop, participants were taught the basics of tie-dye and how to repurpose clothing items rather than throwing them away.

Another workshop that took place at the Craigend Community Hall on Oct. 17 provided an opportunity for people to learn how to make salsa with food leftovers, as well as how to prep cabbage leaves.
