Anyone interested in learning about or applying for the various programs offered by Portage College will have the opportunity to do so during the annual fall open houses that are taking place from Oct. 21-23.
The first open house for courses at the largest post-secondary institution housed in the Lakeland will be held at the Lac La Biche campus on Monday, Oct. 21 while the others take place in St. Paul on Oct. 22 and Cold Lake on Oct. 23. The open houses run from 6-8 p.m.
Luke Muise, a spokesperson for Portage College, said more than 30 high-quality programs will be featured at the open house events, including new programs like Apprenticeship Steamfitter-Pipefitter and the Computer Programming and IT Diploma.
“We offer a wide range of options, so anyone can find something that’s of interest to them,” Muise told Lakeland This Week.
Courses, prizes and food
Those who attend the evening open houses will also be able to enjoy a free BBQ and win door prizes. Furthermore, according to Muise, application fees will also be waived for anyone applying in-person at the events. Additionally, people who do apply at the event can enter to win an iPad Air.
Instructors will be on hand to explain to prospective students the courses and details of the programs.
“There’s no one better to ask for specific details about the day-to-day of a Portage College program than an instructor, and we’ll have plenty of them on-hand at the Open Houses,” he said.
As for the age demographics of those who attend the annual open houses – which take place each fall and spring season – Muise says the events typically bring in people from all ages and backgrounds. While college officials see plenty of applications from high school students and recent grads, he explained, they also get a lot of adult learners at the open houses as well.
“We welcome anyone who wishes to attend and believe that we’re an excellent educational choice for people of all ages and demographics,” he said.
Muise continued by saying that the annual open houses give Portage College an opportunity to connect directly with the communities it serves provide the public with answers to their questions in a more personal and direct way.
