COLD LAKE - It was a busy weekend on the soccer pitches in Cold Lake as the first weekend of Lakeland Cup, hosted by the Lakeland District Soccer Association, took place.

U13 boys' and girls' teams started playing Friday evening, and Saturday included action from the U17 boys' and girls' squads. On Sunday, U13 teams played their final games, which wrapped up later in the afternoon.

U17 teams

In the U17 categories, the Bonnyville girls earned gold over the St. Paul team after the two groups battled it out at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Bonnyville won both matches. Both teams will play at Tier 4 Rural Provincials which are set to take place in St. Paul, July 5-7

The U17 boys' category included three teams. Playing at 9 a.m., the team from St. Paul won 5-0 over the United team made up of players from Lac La Biche, Vermilion and Vegreville.

At 1p.m., the United team would battle against the Bonnyville U17 boys, with Bonnyville winning in decisive fashion. This meant the 5 p.m. game between St. Paul and Bonnvyille would be a battle for gold. With just one goal scored throughout 90 minutes of play, Bonnyville would take the gold medals, and St. Paul won the silver medals.

Both St. Paul and Bonnyville will take part in Tier 4 Rural Provincials.

U13 teams

In the U13 category, there was a long list of boys' and girls' teams taking part in Lakeland Cup.

On the U13 boys' side it came down to a battle between teams from St. Paul and Bonnyville for both the gold medal game and bronze medal game. Winning gold was St. Paul (Andersen), and silver was Bonnyville (McNaught). Winning bronze was St. Paul (Lampron) and in fourth was Bonnyville (Hanusz). Six other teams from across the Lakeland took part in the tournament.

Both St. Paul (Andersen) and Bonnyville (McNaught) will move forward to Tier 4 provincials.

The U13 girls were the last to wrap up the weekend, playing their final games at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Winning gold was the Cold Lake team and earning silver was Bonnyville (Phillips). St. Paul would take home the bronze medals. Three other teams took part in the U13 girls' category.

Heading to provincial will be Cold Lake and St. Paul.

A second weekend of Lakeland Cup action is set to take place in Vegreville June 21 to 23 and will feature U15 and U19 teams from across the Lakeland.
