Environment Canada has issued a blizzard warning for Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula.

The weather agency says between 25 and 40 centimetres of snow may fall between Sunday and midday Monday.

Wind gusts are forecast to hit a maximum of 110 kilometres an hour.

Environment Canada is warning that snow and wind will likely result in poor visibility, making travel potentially hazardous.

The agency says similar storms have previously caused school closures, disruptions in public services, scattered power outages and disruption to air travel.

A blizzard warning is issued when reduced visibility of 400 metres or less is expected for at least four hours.
