Accused in Toronto rapper's death faces Alberta charges in court

A 23-year-old Toronto man facing one charge of attempted murder and two murder charges in the killing of two men in Ontario in 2018 made a brief appearance in Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on Monday on unrelated charges.

The accused was a young offender at the time of the 2018 killings and therefore cannot be named under under publication ban,

He faces 14 unrelated charges in Alberta after being arrested on a nationwide warrant during an Airdrie traffic stop last month.

Airdrie RCMP charged the man with five firearm-related offences, carrying a concealed weapon, three identity fraud charges, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, counterfeit money, and two counts of resisting arrest — resisting and obstructing a police officer. 

He appeared before Judge G. Gaschler in Didsbury court via closed circuit TV from a remand centre in Toronto.

The accused, dressing in a jail-issued jumpsuit, did not speak during the appearance, with his lawyer requesting disclosure and having the matter adjourned until March 3 for election and plea.

The Toronto Police Service charged him in the shooting deaths of 21-year-old rapper Jahvante Smart, better known as Smoke Dawg, and 28-year-old Ernest Modekwe. Both men were killed outside a Toronto nightclub on June 30, 2018.

A woman was also reportedly injured in the same shooting incident.

He is facing the murder and attempted murder charges in Ontario.
