The Government of Alberta is investing $1 million to support more than 65 local fire departments through the Fire Services Training Program Grant.

The funding is aimed at enhancing the training of firefighters across the province, ensuring they are equipped to protect and preserve the safety of Alberta’s communities.

“Firefighters put their lives on the line to protect us, and we’re making sure they have the training they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Ric McIver, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Well-trained fire services are essential to keeping our communities safe, and these grant investments will help firefighters respond with skill and confidence when Albertans need them most.”

Local fire services, often the first to respond to emergencies, play a critical role in clearing accident scenes, delivering emergency care and handling hazardous materials — in addition to responding to fires.

“This investment in firefighter training is not only welcome — it’s essential,” said Chief Randy Schroeder, president of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association. “We are pleased to see the government’s commitment to ensuring our firefighters are prepared to meet the growing demands of emergency response. These grants will directly support the safety and readiness of fire services across Alberta’s communities.”

All municipalities, First Nations and Métis Settlements are eligible to apply for the grant, which supports a wide range of firefighter training including ice water rescues, hazardous materials response and more.
