The Beiseker Fire Department (BFD) has announced the establishment of the Morgan Kitchen Memorial Award, a $1,000 annual scholarship dedicated to supporting the educational goals of the next generation of Alberta firefighters. This award honours the memory of Morgan Kitchen, an Alberta Wildfire crew member who tragically lost his life last year while battling the Jasper wildfires.
In addition to his work with Alberta Wildfire, Morgan also served as a volunteer member of BFD from January 2021 until June 2022, when he departed for the Royal Marines.
Amanda Davies, Deputy Chief of BFD, said people who choose a life of service, as Morgan did, deserve to be remembered.
“When these memories are shared with the newest members of our profession, the spirit of sacrifice endures," Davies said. "Morgan was an eager and engaged member of BFD, always ready for anything. We set up this award to recognize and perpetuate the values of selflessness, courage and mentorship Morgan embodied.”
Each year, firefighters put their lives on the line to ensure Albertans are safe. A
imed at carrying forward Morgan’s legacy and passion for protecting people and communities, the award will be administered by Lakeland College and be provided to a student enrolled in Lakeland’s full time Firefighter Training or Emergency Services Technology program.
Since Morgan also served in both the Canadian Armed Forces and British Royal Marines, special consideration will be given to members of volunteer fire departments, Commonwealth Armed Forces and Alberta Wildfire.
“We’re grateful to BFD for helping keep Morgan’s spirit alive through this award,” shared Morgan’s family – the Kitchens and Avrams. “We hope it inspires future firefighters to serve with the same courage and commitment Morgan did.”
