weather

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a tornado warning Sunday night in southern Alberta, in areas south and north of the city.

To the south there is an alert is in effect for Willow Creek, Vulcan, Carmangay, Champion, Lomond, Nanton, Stavely and Claresholm.

At 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is possibly producing a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.

An update from Environment Canada at 7:30 p.m. says the thunderstorm is located 15 km west of Vulcan and moving east at 25 km/h.

Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible. Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Another alert has been issued in the Airdrie area.

Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to toonie size hail and heavy rain.

This thunderstorm is located 15 km west of Airdrie and is moving 20 km/h to the southeast. Northeast parts of Calgary will be impacted by this thunderstorm. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Environment Canada says if you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately. Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
