Major water main break: Calgary residents and businesses must conserve water.
alert

The City of Calgary issued an emergency alert at about 6:30 a.m. that a critical water main break along 16th Ave NW in Bowness has diminished the city's water supply.

Calgary residents and residents of cities that use Calgary's waters supplies, such as Airdrie, have been told to conserve water. A boil water advisory is in place for Bowness.

"Supply levels have reached a critical state," the alert reads, "affecting the city's ability to provide water to communities to ensure adequate water is available to support emergency fire suppression. All residents and businesses must conserve water. Do not shower or bath. Do not wash dishes or run appliances that use water."

Businesses that use large amounts of water are asked to conserve water such as laundromats and car washes.

Some schools in Calgary's northwest have been impacted by the water main break, the CBE wrote in an email to parents Thursday morning.

A road closure on 16 Avenue N.W. is in affect, including to pedestrians between Home Road and Sarcee Trail.

The alert will be in effect until further notice and the City said in the alert that it has no timeline on when water restrictions will be lifted.
