BALZAC - The captivating "Sole Scholars" art installation at CrossIron Mills in Balzac just south of Airdrie is drawing in both sneaker enthusiasts and art aficionados.
Created in collaboration between PARK (Promoting Artists Redefining Kulture) and CrossIron Mills, this ‘larger-than-life’ experience has been a hit since its launch at the popular shopping mall on Aug. 18.
The eight-foot-long sneaker, brought to life by Calgary artist Vanja Kragulj, is complemented with a centrepiece shoe wall, adorned with 16 sneakers from well-known brands available at CrossIron Mills retailers.
Joel Tatlow, the marketing manager of CrossIron Mills, shared his excitement about the installation's reception in a press release.
"We're thrilled by the positive response Sole Scholars has received from the community,” he said. “It's evident that the fusion of art and sneaker culture has struck a chord, making it a must-visit attraction this season."
Offering a glimpse into her artistic journey, Sumin Choi, the mastermind behind the installation, delved into the creative process and her role in crafting diverse designs from various brands.
"Sole Scholars encapsulates the spirit of contemporary culture with a dash of nostalgic charm,” Choi said in the press release. “I've transformed sneakers from different brands into vibrant expressions of individuality through bold colours and playful lines. The harmonious design extends to the surrounding walls, creating an immersive and dynamic ambiance that elevates the shopping experience."
YYC SOLEdiers, a Calgary-based group of sneaker enthusiasts, has been hosting insightful presentations to teach visitors about the history of sneaker culture.
The CrossIron Mills installation is also featuring live sneaker painting demonstrations by Sydonne Warren, offering visitors an exclusive glimpse into the artistic process. These presentations will take place on Aug. 26 and Sept. 3.
By submitting a ballot at the installation's entrance, two lucky draw winners will have the opportunity to collaborate with local artists and have their creative ideas brought to life on a unique pair of sneakers.
