A male teenage skier was taken to a Calgary hospital in serious condition on Jan. 26 after an uncontrolled landing at Lake Louise Ski Resort.
Stuart Brideaux, a public education officer with Alberta Health Services emergency medical services, said they responded at about 9:45 a.m. after the teenage male skier was injured in the terrain park section of the hill.
He said ski patrol staff initially responded and were able to get the teenage skier off the hill and paramedics took over.
“Ground EMS units assessed the patient and requested STARS [air ambulance] for subsequent transport to the Alberta Children’s Hospital where they were flown in serious condition,” he said.
Kate Langille, a spokesperson with STARS air ambulance, said they were called to the area in the afternoon and ultimately flew the teenager to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.
The terrain park area of the ski resort features options for jumping, 180s, and other tricks of varying difficulty.
The ski resort’s website lists a specific and detailed terrain park safety guide for anyone using the feature.
Emmett McPartlin, director of marketing and sales at the ski resort, said they couldn’t comment on medical information of guests but that it was important to have a “clear understanding of one’s abilities and limits and how they relate to features within the park is the key to safe riding.”
