Wildfire being held west of Benchlands in MD of Bighorn

Sixteen firefighters and two helicopters responding to fire west of Calgary.

MD OF BIGHORN – A small wildfire is burning in the MD of Bighorn near Richards Road, on the south side of the Ghost River.

The 0.6-hectare fire was first assessed this afternoon and its status changed from out of control to being held around 4:30 p.m. Its cause is under investigation.

"There are currently 16 wildland firefighters and two helicopters responding to this wildfire," states an Alberta Wildfire information bulletin posted Wednesday (Sept. 25).

"The helicopters have begun bucketing on the wildfire. Additional resources are en route to assist, including air tanker support if required."

According to the MD of Bighorn, no evacuation order is in place for area residents at this time.

"If an order is made, residents in the area will be notified through VoyentAlert," states an update from the MD.

The fire is located in the Calgary Forest Area (CFA), which includes the Bow Valley and Kananaskis Country. Wildfire danger in the region is currently rated high.

"High temperatures, dry conditions and very strong winds are being experienced across the CFA," states the Alberta Wildfire bulletin. "These conditions can drive fast moving wildfires and lead to volatile and unpredictable wildfire behaviour. The forecast is calling for more seasonal conditions with the possibility of light precipitation over the coming days."

There have been 81 wildfires in the CFA since Jan. 1, burning a total 64.21 hectares.
