BCHS graduates reminisce and celebrate high school completion

On June 22, Bonnyville Centralized High School (BCHS) celebrated this year's graduates at a ceremony filled with memories and advice.

BONNYVILLE – On June 22, Bonnyville Centralized High School (BCHS) celebrated this year's graduates at a ceremony filled with memories and advice.

Family, friends, faculty, and dignitaries gathered at the school to see the graduates off into adulthood. Many laughs were shared, students high fived the principal, and stories were shared about the great times they had during high school, particularly their school trip to Canmore, and the school play.

Many students mentioned their appreciation for the efforts teachers and staff put into making their high school experience fun.

Students shared their aspirations of travelling, attending university, moving to the city, and growing up to make big money.

Bill Driedger, associate superintendant of Northern Lights Public School (NLPS), kicked off the speeches by reciting a lighthearted poem that brought many smiles.

“A generation great, we say with pride, go forth and let your learning be your guide.”

This year’s valedictorian Easton Wakulchyk recalled the good times and funny stories of his high school career. He encouraged his peers to strive for excellence.

“As we continue on our walks of life into adulthood, I’d like to share some of the advice that’s been passed on to me. No matter what your next steps are, always act in your best effort, give 100 per cent in every aspect of your life, condition yourself to make that 100 per cent your next starting point, so that you’ll be giving 1,000 per cent of your original the next time.”

Roy Ripkens, board trustee with NLPS, encouraged students to strategize and work hard to achieve their goals.

“Taking chances should not be about recklessness, it should be about applying what you know, sizing up the challenges, and making a plan.”

He added, “Take those post-secondary courses please, apprentice from an expert, and work hard. You will find this all pays off. And when you acquire the skills and expertise you've studied and worked for, consider coming home... help build this community.”

MD of Bonnyville Reeve Barry Kalinski, and Town of Bonnyville Deputy Mayor Byron Johnson shared similar sentiments, letting graduates know that Bonnyville will always be here to welcome them with open arms.

“We have a lot of amazing people in this area. I’m proud to be the Reeve of the M.D of Bonnyville, so wherever you choose, if you choose to stay here in the workforce, we’re going to be blessed to have you here. If you choose to go onwards wherever it takes you, they’re going to be blessed to have you,” said Kalinski.

“As you step into the next chapter of your lives, remember the lessons you've learned and the friendships you've gleaned... Know that Bonnyville stands behind you proud and supportive. If your path leads you back to Bonnyville, remember that we will be here to welcome you back home,” said Johnson.

“What you guys don’t realize is youth breathes life into communities. Youth give a heartbeat... for the past 18 years, you all were that breath and heartbeat of our community,” Johnson added.

Principal Michael Straile delivered a serious and heartfelt speech, stating “As I look out at the sea of eager faces, I'm filled with hope and optimism for the future.”

Straile said he has high hopes for this graduating class.

“You’ve adapted with grace and ingenuity. You’ve learned to thrive in a rapidly evolving landscape, and in doing so you’ve developed skills that will serve you well in any endeavour you choose to pursue.”
