BONNYVILLE – The Bonnyville Municipal Library put on a writer’s workshop called ‘Write a Fabulous First Page’ with certified book coach and developmental editor Rebecca Pickens, who taught the workshop virtually from the United States.
The workshop was put on as part of the library’s expanding adult programming.
When asked how they had managed to find an editor from America to teach a workshop in a small town in Canada, Library Assistant Programmer Veronique Moreau explained that she had a personal connection with Pickens, who agreed to teach the workshop.
“I truly believe my job is the most fun job in the world, and I truly love talking about writing any chance I get,” said Pickens “It’s always a pleasure.”
The event was available to attend in-person at the library, or people could tune in live online.
Pickens spoke about the importance of the first page of a book, and how it was not only important as a hook for readers, but for agents as well.
“Think of the first page as a first impression that we make on our reader. If you want to get a book into a literary agent's hands, they have very specific elements in mind that they are looking for on that first page to decide if it’s something they are going to keep reading,” said Pickens.
She said it’s not an exaggeration to assume a literary agent might be receiving over 500 manuscripts every year, along with queries.
The workshop explored key ideas around setting, tone, protagonists, potential story speed bumps, and optimal starting points to help readers write a sparkling first page.
Workshop attendees were given workbooks and information packages to take home. Several participants commented on how inspirational the workshop was.
