BONNYVILLE – Bonnyville RCMP frontline officers are now equipped with body-worn cameras.
S/Sgt. Sarah Parke says it has been going well with the new body-cams, and the techology is a real benefit to the officers in regards to investigations and evidence gathering.
“As far as the physical camera itself, the members just clip it on and go. It’s not a hinderance physically at all,” says Parke.
Parke spoke about the cameras creating a “two-way street” of accountability and safety for both officers and citizens.
“It can help to keep a situation calm, that might otherwise escalate. We’re looking forward to having them as a permanent part of our tools,” says Parke.
A statement was released on Jan. 27, explaining that the initiative is part of “the Alberta RCMP’s ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability, and modernization. Following comprehensive training, officers are now ready to use this cutting-edge technology while serving their communities.”
Between 10,000 and 15,000 cameras are being deployed across Canada as part of a 12-month nationwide rollout.
Key benefits include unbiased audio/visual documentation of police interactions, better evidence collection, enhanced accountability and public trust, and efficient complaint resolution.
