Bonnyville sets the scene for Indian Relay documentary

On July 5, Ranchmans’ Farm and Feed store in Bonnyville had some special customers stop by to film a scene for their upcoming documentary Horse Warriors. Taking advantage of the store’s recent addition of a bridal boutique upstairs, the site was used to film an actress trying on wedding dresses for the yet to be released Horse Warriors documentary series showcasing the sport of Indian Relay in Alberta.

“It all went good. It was unexpected. They got footage all over the store, but the main filming was upstairs in the bridal boutique. The film crew made it really easy and relaxed. They were joking around and carrying on, trying to help everybody keep calm,” said store manager Samantha Hines.

Hines reports that the footage filmed at Ranchmans' Farm and Feed will be part of season two, and should be expected to come out in the fall of 2025.

“Relay racing pits First Nations teams against one another in a mesmerizing and often dangerous, bareback horse race,” Horse Warriors producer Neil Grahn said of the sport of Indian Relay.

“Relay is exploding in popularity because it combines raw action while celebrating the special bond between plains people and the horse.”

Grahn said the series captures “the internal dynamics of three teams, ‘Old Sun, Spearhead, and ‘River Cree’, as they evolve through a season of racing. ‘Horse Warriors’ dives deep into the psyche of these relay athletes, as they strive for glory in this original extreme sport.”

The first season is set to premiere Sept. 2 on APTN.

“This season we’re covering the relay teams, River Cree, Poitras Relay, and Two Medicine,” Grahn said, directing people to check out their Vimeo series trailer at:
