BONNYVILLE – The Bonnyville and District SPCA shook things up this year with a 1970s disco themed party. This annual fundraiser is their biggest of the year and helps raise funds for operational costs and upcoming projects at the animal shelter.
The Nov. 29 event was hosted at the Senior drop-in Centre and included a dinner and a dance under a disco ball.
Executive Director Lindsay McNaught thanked the board of directors, volunteers, and shelter staff for all their hard work and their help in making the event happen.
“I’d like to thank everyone for being here tonight . . . We are so grateful for all of you who came out. It’s your support that allows our shelter to care for and support the animals,” said McNaught.
Dawn Webber, president of the board of directors, acknowledged the dedicated staff that deal with the dirty work and heartbreak that is part of working at an animal shelter.
“A lot of people think going to the shelter is such a wonderful experience all the time because of the cute [animals], but it takes a huge amount of heart to work in a shelter. The [people] that work at our shelter, they see the worst of it. They see abandonment, abuse, and they have to deal with customers who are not always right. They deserve a ton of credit tonight,” said Webber.
A silent and live auction took place, and emcee Caitlyn Bush brought out a competitive streak in the crowd as she led them through a lively game of Name that Tune featuring music from the 1970s.
Attendees also took the disco theme seriously, as the crowd was decked out in shiny, flared, and flamboyant attire.
