BONNYVILLE – Bonnyville local Tracy Law, known as the Green Eyed Medium, has had a close affinity with spirits ever since she can remember.
“When I was a child, I was caught, or rather overheard, talking to someone that others couldn't see,” says Law. “When I was asked who I was talking to, I would just lie and say it was my imaginary friend. I never had an imaginary friend.”
Law explains that she has never felt alone, though the spirits do grant her privacy. Whether she is out for a walk or in her house alone, she has always felt there were spirits around her.
“My upbringing in religion taught me that ‘Spirit’ is as real as anybody, and even though I no longer practice that religion, I found that the belief in ‘Spirit’ stayed with me.”
Growing up, having a relationship with the spirit world felt normal to Law, and she never thought of herself as special for being able to communicate with those who are not physical.
“It was always just something I did. As I grew older and met more people, I met many kindred friends who could also communicate with non-physical beings in their own way. Now, two of us do it exactly the same way.”
The daughter of a military father, Law did a lot of moving around Canada before settling in Bonnyville in 1989 and said she has always really liked the way the area feels.
“I've experienced many places, and they all have a different feel. I like how Bonnyville feels different from Cold Lake, St. Paul and Elk Point. They all have a slightly familiar feel, much like siblings who, although related, have their own personalities.”
Though Bonnyville's history is not all positive, Law still feels that it has a unique vibe that feels like a mystery begging to be discovered.
“Bonnyville just has a uniqueness that feels right to me. I don't have an emotional attachment to it the way someone who was born and raised here would. However, I stay here because I feel so at home.”
When asked why she thinks Bonnyville has such an interesting energy, Law said she believes there are several factors.
“There is a lot of unique energy that flows through the ground here. Like it is heightened and there is just such an underlying mystery about it. I've heard so many odd stories about things that happen in the background that the average person just doesn't know about. There are whispers of land being stolen and people being displaced.”
Law has experienced an abundance of spirits in the area and has felt lingering energies during her work energetically clearing spaces.
“I did a property clearing once and there were so many residual energies here that just seemed almost unaware that they were walking in circles. So, I opened the door to let them go and it was like a busy train station. I could have been there for a week.”
As Halloween is approaching, Law was asked if she feels that the veil really is thinner this time of year.
“I think that belief is powerful and that absolutely the veil can be thinner because people, quite frankly, are just more willing to see at Halloween,” compared to other times of the year.
Often, people come to Law to help them connect with loved ones who have passed.
"Almost every reading I do has people asking ‘Are they OK?’ They're more OK than you are. You're the one stuck in a ridiculous meat suit with limited perception. They're not confined to a body anymore, they're more than OK.”
If someone is encountering or wants to prevent unwanted energy, Law has some advice to protect yourself and your space, which entails being more mindful about the way you live in your home.
“Your home is your sanctuary and when you love it, it loves you back and takes care of you. Your home is an extension of you in a way that, if something goes wrong with it, it can reflect your own state of being. Yes, you can clear your house with salt or smudge, yes you can pray, all the things, those things are great. And still - be more mindful about the way you live in and treat your home.”
