BONNYVILLE – Ice fishing gear was stolen from the Bonnyville Friendship Centre’s shed during a recent office closure between Jan. 16 and Jan. 19, which Executive Direction Janet Gobert said was purchased through a grant and used to facilitate community events.
Among the stolen items were two ice augers, a 12-person tent, and 10 lawn chairs.
“What’s really frustrating about it is that it was actually purchased through a grant, and those are considered capital assets, so I cannot re-apply for them... It’s hard when resources are limited.” said Gobert.
The loss of the ice fishing gear is a loss for the entire community, as The Friendship Centre would host events using the equipment, creating meaningful experiences for youth and families.
“We would take people out ice fishing for both our family and youth events. So, it’s quite a loss,” said Gobert.
Gobert explained that replacing the items as a non-profit organization will be a challenge and asks the community to keep an eye out for the items in case the thieves attempt to post them for sale.
“It is incredibly disheartening that, despite the work we do to support our community, someone felt entitled enough to take these items,” said the Friendship Centre in a recent social media post.
When asked if they are accepting donation of ice fishing gear, Gobert said anything would help and it would be extremely appreciated.
