COLD LAKE – The Cold Lake Royals high school football team hosted the Grande Prairie St. Joseph Celtics Football team in the 4A Provincial North Final on Nov. 16 at the Tom Varughese Field.
The St. Joseph Celtics took the win 44-26, but head coach of the Royals, Kelly Johnson, said he is pleased with how his team has played this season, pointing specifically to a win against Red Deer’s Hunting Hills Lightning football team, earlier in the season.
“The highlight was the game [on Nov. 9] when we beat Hunting Hills from Red Deer in the provincial semi-finals. We came from behind and won the game. It was the best our kids played all year,” said Johnson. The final score of the game was 15-10.
He said getting to the 4A Provincial North Final was huge, and he feels his team played well.
“I thought our kids played awesome this year, and they really picked up momentum at the end of the year, so it was nice to see.”
Johnson reports that parent support has been huge, creating a vibrant energy at home and away games.
“We got a ton of parents travelling, which is pretty exciting for us,” said Johnson.
