BONNYVILLE – The Bonnyville Municipal Library 2025 budget was presented to the Town of Bonnyville council on Dec. 11 by new Library manager Jill Tercier.

Speaking with council, Tercier discussed the importance of libraries, and how significant it is that the library provides free access to information, Wi-Fi, and even equipment rentals like a telescope, puzzle, or basketballs.

Tercier reported a small increase of one per cent in the budget, due to the increase in costs. A total of $143,537 was the Town of Bonnyville's proposed portion, with an overall operating budget of $426,097.

Coun. Byron Johnson complimented the diversity of the programs the library offers.

“It really exposes the youth to a lot of different things and it's all free, so just keep up the great work,” said Johnson.

The presentation highlighted the wealth of programing offered, including paint nights, a book club for adults, and children's story time. These programs contribute to the library being a social hub where people can come and benefit from not only the books, but from the social connection.

“We are investing in our futures, not just the young people . . . but those of all ages, all abilities, and from all walks of life,” said Tercier.

Tercier shared the statistics from 2023. The library had 1,665 memberships - 567 of which were new patrons.

“Five hundred new memberships says a lot for how important public libraries are for community,” said Mayor Elisa Brosseau.

Tercier highlighted some of the ways the library will continue in its dedication to providing free and accessible literature, programming, and training.

“For our 2025 plan, of course we want to continue to provide a safe and inclusive space for everyone,” said Tercier.

Plans for next year include listening to the needs and wants of the community to target programming. Tercier spoke about engaging in collaborations with community partners such as The Hive and FCSS and mentioned that library programmer Kat Eliason will bring a wagon of books to the Bonnylodge and Extendicare, so residents at the facilities have access to library materials.

Tercier clarified that she has only been working at the library for one month and contributed most of the work that had been highlighted to her predecessor, Nicole Labrie.
