BONNYVILLE – Members of the Jr. A Pontiacs hockey team came out to the Bonnyville Municipal Library to help out and entertain children who attended the library’s Family Literacy Day event.
Family Literacy Day is a national initiative intended to promote reading and learning as a family. Library Manager Jill Tercier said that although the participation of libraries is not mandatory, library staff felt the event was a great way to get the community together and offer an event for the whole family.
The Jan. 27 event included several activity stations around the library that gave families the opportunity to hang out with librarians and hockey players. There were goodie bags, Play-Doh and Lego stations, a button making station, door prizes, and the entire library of books to explore.
“I think it’s awesome that we can offer a bunch of different activities, so they hit the different age groups and different interests - whether it’s doing a craft, playing hangman with the Pontiacs, or listening to some storytelling. We offer group activities, but you can also go off and do your own thing, maybe take a silly photo at our photo booth,” said Tercier.
Pontiacs’ members Maxim Shushkov, Brayden Gourley, Rockston Ror-Chow, and Nate Crashley presented a ‘readers theatre’ performance of Robert Muche’s “Pigs” along with Kat Ellison, programs team lead at the library.
“It's so great to get community members like the Pontiacs out. The kids just love them, and I think it gives the Pontiacs a chance to be kids for a day and do something good in the community,” said Tercier.
