BONNYVILLE - David Sharun has been appointed as the new deputy mayor for the Town of Bonnyville, and he expressed his zeal to dive into the opportunity.
“I’m really looking forward to being more involved in everything, even what we think of as small things like cheque signing. Anything I can do to make the mayor’s life easier,” said Sharun.
His nine-month term began on Jan. 1, and was announced during the Jan. 14 council meeting, where Mayor Elisa Brosseau extended her gratitude for former Deputy Mayor Byron Johnson’s service.
“I want to thank Coun. Johnson for all the hard work the last term. It was quite busy, and you supported me a lot and I do appreciate it so thank you,” said Brosseau
Sharun feels this is an ideal time to take on this new role.
“It’s exciting. It's another challenge. As I'm getting into my semi-retirement here, I will have even more time to devote to the residents of the community. Everything is just going to be on a different level,” said Sharun.
“I’m going to continue to be an ambassador for Bonnyville, regardless of whether it's on a local level or on a higher level,” said Sharun
Sharun gained experience acting as deputy mayor during his previous time on council, when he sat on council from 1991-2001.
“During that time, I was deputy mayor as well. I stepped down in 2001. I decided with my family that it was time to stay at home and be a dad. There was hockey and figure skating and everything in between with the kids,” said Sharun.
He said he has already been signing cheques and has been interested in gaining a more in-depth understanding of the Town’s finances.
“I’ve been learning about the cheque signing process, and about who we’re paying, what we’re paying, and why we’re paying it. It’s taking a little longer than normal because I want to find out what I’m signing,” said Sharun.
He is also looking forward to chairing the next governance and priorities meeting, as well as attending events.
