WESTLOCK – Excel Ranches, the Miller family, held its 35th-annual bull sale at their ranch west of Westlock March 9, with 51 Limousin, Red Angus and Black Angus on the block.
And despite of the cool day, a large crowd of buyers was on hand and online to bid on and purchase bulls, selling for an overall sale average of $5,991.
The high-selling yearling Limousin bull was Lot 12, Excel Polled Klondike 19K, a Jan. 12, 2022 bull with a birthweight of 82 pounds and a weaning weight of 867 pounds. He had a sale weight of 1,465 pounds with a 36.5-cm scrotal measure and sold for $12,500 to J. Jorga Farms Limousin of Flintoff, Sask.
The high-selling, two-year-old Limousin was Lot 32, Excel Polled Jace 66J, a Feb. 13, 2021 bull with a birthweight of 80 pounds and a weaning weight of 690 pounds. This bull was purchased for $8,500 by Kineval Farms of Trochu for $8,500.
The high-selling Red Angus bull was Lot 49, Red Excel Kadillac 26K. This Jan. 30, 2022 bull had a birthweight of 100 pounds and a weaning weight of 790 pounds. His sale weight was 1,450 pounds with a 34 cm-scrotal measurement and was purchased for $7,500 by Kevin and Sarah Semler of Westlock.
The high-selling Black Angus bull was lot 48, Excel Kraken 7K. This Jan. 10, 2022 bull had a very moderate birthweight of 68 pounds, a weaning weight of 793 pounds, and a sale weight of 1,420 pounds with a 37-cm scrotal measurement and was purchased for $7,250 by 3G Farms of Barrhead.
Volume buyers of the sale, each with three purchases were Jason Turre, West Moberly, Stopanski Cattle and Bulman Ranching.
Excel Ranches started raising purebred Limousin cattle in 1986, and since, both the farm and family have expanded to now include three generations of the Miller family involved in raising purebred Limousin, purebred Red and Black Angus and working border collies.
