COLD LAKE - Residents visiting Cold Lake's air force base could be subject to a random identification check or vehicle search, as per their new protection procedures.

As of Friday, Jan. 24, the back gate to 4 Wing, which is accessible from Hwy. 55, will be closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and manned at random times.

The front entrance will also have security keeping a watchful eye and confirming the identification of those coming and going.

Accoring to Capt. Julie Brunet, public affairs officer for 4 Wing, military police officers will also be conducting random vehicle searches, which could include members of the general public.

Brunet told the Nouvelle the changes to their method of operation are strictly part of the Canadian Armed Forces force protection measures.

Acting 4 Wing Commander, Lt.-Col. James Kettles said in a statement, “Force protection consists of preventive measures to ensure the safety of our personnel and its resources. As such, the security of military operations is at the forefront of our military planning and decision-making process. 4 Wing Cold Lake certainly understands there may be some inconvenience to the community with limiting access to our premises, however, the security of military operations is of utmost importance, as we are committed in ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of our personnel while respecting operational security and force protection requirements.”
