COLD LAKE - Staging areas along the Iron Horse Trail could see upgrades if a grant application is successful.

City of Cold Lake council voted in favour of supporting the grant application from the Village of Horseshoe Bay at its regular council meeting on Dec. 10.

The application, which is being submitted under the Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) Program, will seek funding for staging area designs along the Iron Horse Trail. The staging areas are located in several communities, including Waskatenau, Smoky Lake, St. Paul, Heinsburg, Elk Point, Bonnyville, Beaver River Trestle, and Ardmore.

CAO Kevin Nagoya explained the request, stating, “This is a request from MuniCorp Limited to provide a letter of support for a grant application that is being prepared by the Village of Horseshoe Bay.” Horesehoe Bay is located northwest from the Town of St. Paul.

Nagoya also brought up further details about the specific areas involved in the grant.

"There are a couple of staging areas that they would like to do some design work on.”

According to information from the City of Cold Lake, it was noted that Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail, which opened in June 2003, is part of both the Trans Canada Trail and the Trans Canadian Snowmobile Trail systems. The Iron Horse Trail spans 300 kilometres and is a continuous recreation corridor running through northeast Alberta, supporting a variety of multi-use activities year-round.

In response to the request, council made a motion to authorize the City of Cold Lake to provide the letter of support to North East Muni-Corr Ltd., further fostering regional collaboration and the development of recreational infrastructure across the northeast.
