COLD LAKE - The City of Cold Lake has taken steps to formalize its ongoing partnership with the Northern Lights Public Schools (NLPS) by entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the collection of recyclables at the Cold Lake Energy Centre.

This partnership involves the Cold Lake High School Envi-Royals Club, which is an extracurricular group that has been collecting empty beverage containers at the Energy Centre for several years to support environmental initiatives and fund activities, according to the City of Cold Lake.

During the regular council meeting on Sep. 10, City council agreed with the recommendation from administration to authorize the MOU, which will remain in effect until Aug. 31, 2025.

CAO Kevin Nagoya said that while the relationship has been ongoing for some time, the municipality felt it should be formalized.

He also addressed concerns about potential legal liabilities. “Some questions were raised in regard to legalities and liabilities and stuff like that because the kids that do volunteer under the Enviro Club, Royals Club, do sort garbage for recyclables,” said the CAO.

Nagoya emphasized the need for clear oversight and safety measures.

"We want to make sure that, from a safety perspective, we don't have no control over those kids... the teachers and the EAs that are working for the high school kind of oversee that, and if there's anything that happens during that time, it's kind of their responsibility."

He also highlighted the importance of recognizing the contribution the City makes to the club through the initiative.

"A lot of the local businesses actually do that for our community groups, just donate them so they come and pick them up... That’s what this is about, just formalizing that... and some recognition that the City of Cold Lake does provide those donations to the club."

Council made a motion that the City of Cold Lake proceed with entering into a MOU with the school division, as recommended.
