COLD LAKE - According to Environment Canada’s preliminary calculations, the Cold Lake area was one of 13 areas across the province to have set a new temperature record for Sept. 2.
A preliminary new record of 33.1C was recorded for Cold Lake. The old record of 29.8C was set in 1998. Records in the area have been kept since 1952.
The following areas across Alberta set a daily maximum temperature record on Sept. 2, 2024 (temperature values given in degrees Celsius):
- Athabasca area - Preliminary new record of 30.0. Old record of 29.5 set in 1988. Records in this area have been kept since 1900.
- Camrose area - Preliminary new record of 32.6. Old record of 30.9 set in 2009. Records in this area have been kept since 1921.
- Coronation area - Preliminary new record of 33.8. Old record of 32.1 set in 1998. Records in this area have been kept since 1912 .
- Edmonton International Airport area - Preliminary new record of 32.7. Old record of 31.4 set in 2022. Records in this area have been kept since 1959.
- Elk Island National Park area - Preliminary new record of 31.5. Old record of 30.6 set in 2009. Records in this area have been kept since 1966.
- Fort Chipewyan area - Preliminary new record of 28.8. Old record of 27.0 set in 1988. Records in this area have been kept since 1883.
- Fort McMurray area - Preliminary new record of 31.5. Old record of 31.1 set in 1938. Records in this area have been kept since 1908.
- Lloydminster area - Preliminary new record of 32.6. Old record of 30.6 set in 1998. Records in this area have been kept since 1952.
- Lacombe area - Preliminary new record of 32.5. Old record of 31.9 set in 2017. Records in this area have been kept since 1907.
- Red Deer area - Preliminary new record of 32.9. Old record was 32.8. Record have been kept in this area since 1904.
- Vegreville area - Preliminary new record of 33.4. Old record of 32.6 set in 2009. Records in this area have been kept since 1918.
- Wainwright area - Preliminary new record of 34.3. Old record of 32.2 set in 1998. Records in this area have been kept since 1966.
Environment Canada notes that the temperature records reported here have been derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record and may contain preliminary information.
