COLD LAKE - At a Aug. 13 City of Cold Lake council meeting, council members reviewed and approved two funding requests, supporting both a local professional association and a neighboring community's fire department.

The first request came from the APEGA Lakeland Branch, which was organizing its 2024 Golf Tournament at the Grand Centre Golf & Country Club on Aug. 16. The annual event aimed to raise awareness of APEGA (Alberta Professional Engineers & Geoscientists Association) in the Lakeland region and provide a networking opportunity for local professionals, according to the City of Cold Lake agenda.

"I purchased four entries into the tournament. And the funds come from ‘Council Goodwill.’ I would throw in some swag in there for their door prizes," said Mayor Craig Copeland. The motion passed unanimously, allocating $125 each for four entries and an additional $250 for a prize package.

The second request was from the Village of Pierceland, Sask., seeking support for an upcoming golf tournament on Sep. 7. The tournament's proceeds will go toward the Pierceland Volunteer Fire Department to help purchase essential equipment, including fire suits and tanks.

Last year, Cold Lake donated $500 to the Pierceland tournament and decided to maintain the same level of support for this year's event.

"I put this motion forth last year, and they said they were surprised that we gave such a great donation,” said Coun. Bob Mattice. “They were not expecting the $500, they just wanted some welfare. So, if we felt thrifty, we could just donate prizes to them.”

In the end, council agreed to a $500 donation for the 2024 Pierceland Golf Tournament.
